Cry for Help the Modern Way: Emergency Alert Systems

When it comes to emergencies, timing is everything. A split-second can draw the line between survival and extinction. Thus, we have to alert authorities immediately. Considering the emotional trauma and the weight of the emergency situation, informing the authorities would have been a tough task to do. Thanks to simple technology, we can easily do so by simply lifting a finger and pressing the right button. Here are some of the most common and most useful alert systems that we see today.

Emergency Medical Alert System

Designed to provide medical help in emergency situations immediately, an emergency medical alert system comprises a medical alarm console, a transmitter and a medical monitoring center. Once the transmitter button is pressed, the console receives the signal and transmits it to the monitoring center. The center assists the victims to reach hospital through ambulance services or any other urgent help.

This device is easy to operate. Phone numbers can be programmed into the unit and stored according to the user's preference. A connection is established once the button is pressed. In some systems, the unit informs the monitoring personnel if the transmitter is in a horizontal position, which may indicate that the victim has fallen down.

Emergency Pull Stations

One of the most ubiquitous alert system devices are emergency pull stations. These devices can be seen in buildings and transportations. Composed of a pull station itself and a control panel, this device allows people to alert the fire department and other authorities in case of fire. Pull stations are also very visible in trains and subways. In case an emergency occurs while the train is running, anyone can just alert the train operator as well as the control office. This makes it easier for authorities to provide immediate attention to the victims.

Emergency Broadcast System

Emergencies do not just happen in our homes or communities. Emergencies can happen on a national scale, too. Terrorist attacks, wars and natural calamities can urge the government to warn everyone within the jurisdiction to be informed or prepared. The last time it happened in the United States was during the September 11 attacks.

These are just three of the most commonly used alert systems today. Aside from these, many private companies use different devices or systems of alerting authorities.
