Emergency Essentials

Surviving an emergency situation is not a joke. It is not easy to be trapped or stranded in a place where your only hope is that someone find you while you wait for that moment. There have been many instances in which victims wait for days, weeks or even months before being rescued. Sometimes, people find themselves in the scariest of situations --- under a collapsed building, inside a blocked tunnel, on top of a tree while crocodiles are hanging out below or on a deserted island. That's why it is important to be prepared with everything you need to deal with these situations appropriately. Here are some of things that should be with you in case you find yourself in a horrible emergency situation.

  • Food and Water. The first things that should be with you are enough food and water. If you have a place to run to during a disaster (like a cellar or basement), make sure you have food and water in it to help you survive. The foods to consider are those that do not expire or spoil easily. Canned goods are excellent choices. A protein bar and an energy drink will also provide enough energy to get through it.

  • First Aid Kit. Having a first aid kit is one of the wisest that you can do when disaster strikes. The first things that should be in your kit are cotton, antiseptics, antibiotics and medications for common illnesses. In case something untoward happens, you can take care of yourself and the people around you. The last thing you want in times like that is to stay injured.

  • Tool Kit. You will also need a tool kit. A flashlight should be on top of your list. A whistle and a Swiss army knife are also great additions. Having a tool kit is extremely useful. You can't easily open canned products without a can opener or a knife. You can't climb up from pits without a rope. You can't see in the dark without a flashlight. There is also a greater chance of you being found more easily if you have an emergency radio with you.

  • Knowledge and Skills. This is the most important thing that you should have in case of an emergency. Even when you have a first aid kit, how can you save yourself and other people if you don't know how to perform first aid? You should learn the basics of survival so that even when it takes a little too long before you are rescued, you'll still manage to stay alive.

Having these four important group of items are enough to survive a calamitous situation. Without any of these, there is a very little chance of survival. It wouldn't hurt to be prepared. After all, it only takes a little time to complete all of them.
