Emergency Generator: Handy Power

A hurricane has just paid your little town a visit. Although you’re glad that no one died or was injured in your town despite the colossal force of the winds, you are still infuriated because you can’t watch your favorite TV show. Power failure always happens after a disaster. Suddenly, you hear your neighbor turning up the volume of the stereo. Your face brightens. To your dismay, there is still a blackout. You wonder why your neighbor’s house is well-lit when the rest of the community is in darkness. Your neighbor must have an emergency generator.

Power sometimes goes off for an extended period for reasons varying from earthquakes to tornadoes to simple road accidents that made a post collapse. Although people can live without electricity, power failures still cause major disturbances, especially loss of money by business establishments. That’s why an emergency generator is very beneficial.

Emergency generators come in various sizes. You have to take into consideration that the size you should choose depends on your power need. Although the bigger generators can support more items or appliances on backup circuits, the cost also becomes bigger. This is why when you’re using a generator, you should really consume energy wisely because the amount of power you use is equivalent to the amount of money you spend.

There are two types of emergency generators: permanent standby generators and portable generators. Permanent standby generators are installed as part of the entire electrical system. They provide the needed power to the wiring. To prevent the generator from back-feeding power into utility lines, an automatic switch is needed. It also protects the machine from damage when power comes back. Only a licensed electrician should install this generator and the city building department should inspect the wiring ans switches. When it is complete, you should notify the local utility company.

On the other hand, portable generators are generally used only when there is a need for a few vital electrical circuits. A portable generator is the preferred type when power failure only happens once in a blue moon. It can support some of the essential items such as lights, refrigerator, water-well pumps and TV among others.
