Emergency Services: Just a Call Away

Emergencies, by nature, have a nasty habit of sneaking up on you just when you least expect them. Even when you are all prepared, they can still manage to give your life a little spice by being unpredictable. After all, what is an emergency without the element of surprise? This makes emergencies much more difficult to deal with. This is why you must be prepared at all times. Although you can survive and respond to an emergency all by yourself, most of the time, a helping hand is desperately needed and sought.

An ideal community has organizations whose primary job is to ensure the safety of the public by addressing different types of emergencies. These organizations are called “emergency services.” Various organizations deal with various emergencies. Some of these agencies exist to address specific types of emergencies. Some agencies aim to create groups to deal with an ad hoc or unexpected emergencies. Others engage in prevention programs and community awareness to help everyone detect, report and address emergencies effectively.

Core Emergency Services

To ensure public safety, a community must have three core emergency services. These services are almost universally recognized as core to the emergency care provision. Often, these services are provided and managed by the government. These core emergency services are the police, the fire service and the emergency medical service. The police ensures safety by acting to reduce crimes against persons and property. The fire service deals with fire and rescue operations. The emergency medical service responds to people who need urgent medical attention such as accident and crime victims and those who are in a life-and-death situation.

Secondary Emergency Services

Secondary emergency services can be provided by the government or by private organizations. The Coastguard performs search and rescue operations at sea. The Bomb Disposal Service renders services to detonate dangerous explosives such as terrorist devices and unexploded bombs. In some countries, the government provides mountain, cave and mine rescue services to provide search and rescue in specific areas that need technical expertise.

Aside from these services, you'll find so many other types of emergency services in your area. Park rangers and lifeguards provide immediate emergency response too. The Red Cross is one of the most widely known agencies that provide emergency service.

Working together is the key in ensuring public safety. Emergencies happen so suddenly. Thus, response must always be just as quick. Being aware about the emergency services in your area is the first step in dealing with emergencies. Always take note of their contact numbers so you can easily call them in case an emergency occurs.
